Easy Diy Crafts Out of Household Items
Crafting with kids can be so much fun, but we've found it's almost always spontaneous and unplanned. On top of that it can get pretty pricey to go to the craft store and get all the elements for an elaborate craft day. Our boys (we have 6 between the 3 of us!) ask us to paint or draw or make a ninja mask at the drop of the hat and so we've learned to get creative with what we have lying around. Here are a handful of DIYs we've made with items that most everyone – crafty or not – has in their cupboards!

TP Roll Flower Bouquet
Cut petals into a roll of toilet paper, get out the paints and before you know it you have a beautiful Springtime bouquet!
Using kid-safe scissors, have your kids make even cuts about two inches into the tubes. Then have them bend the cuts back, creating the petals.
Now they're ready to paint! Paint each petal and let it dry completely.
Paperbag Puppets
Take this everyday lunch sack and turn it into hours of imaginary playtime. We made this pirate, princess and mermaid with paper from a scrap bin.
Paper bag puppets are a really cost-effective way to create imaginative playtime based on whatever favorite character or animal your kids are into that week. Whether it's pirates and mermaids, superheroes and princesses, cats and dogs, these puppets don't take too long and they cost you less than a couple dollars.
Cereal Box Jet Packs
Next time you finish off a box of cereal, add some colorful tape, tissue paper, and you guessed it, a TP roll, and you've got yourself a jet pack! Our boys love this one.
All you need to do is cover the box in tape, affix some ribbon arm straps, tape on the halved toilet rolls, stuff with tissue paper, and you've got yourself a real deal super hero!
Ocean Sounds Stick
An empty paper towel roll and some rice, popcorn kernels or beans and you've got yourself a rain stick!
First, start by cutting a 1/2 inch slit into one of the paper towel rolls. Insert the second roll into the first and tape in place. On one end of the now combined rolls, cover it with a piece of the parchment paper and tape in place. Now, empty some corn, beans or rice into the tubes, and cover the open end with parchment paper, taping it all in place. To make it extra sturdy, we covered the tube in duct tape.
Now you're ready to let it rain.
5 Hands-on Activities for 15 Month-Olds
This one is WAY back in our archives, when we had two rambunctious fifteen month olds. They want to get into EVERYTHING, touch, feel, taste, and experience whatever they can get their hands on. So, we set up five little stations of safe activities they could enjoy, all with items we had on hand!
- Activity: Throw a few small toys in bowl of rice and give your little a shovel.
- Activity: Using an ice tray, give them items to put in each ice cube section.
- Activity: Building cup towers just to knock them over.
- Activity: Transferring bouncy balls from bucket to bucket.
- Activity: Baby shampoo finger painting.
Cardboard Robot
Another great imaginative play DIY.
Grab some duct tape, scissors and your box and you're ready to go! Cut out a hole for your kid's head and arms, serated knives work best for this part, then time to decorate! The best part about striping with duct tape is that it looks precise and clean with minimal effort. Start at the top and work you way down alternating colors. Then grab a contrasting color to add a little heart and time to play!
